    Classical Music

Lois and I have always been great fans of classical music and this past week was especially interesting. There is an Opera series every Wednesday at the Cinemark-Paradise theatre on Sheridan and I75. Wednesday the opera was Turendot one of the really great operas, this Wednesday they will play Carmen. These operas were screened at the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City. Carmen is one of the most loved of all operas, if you go to google you can listen to excerpts from the Operas.

On Thursday we attended a concert at the Susan B Katz auditorium behind the library on Sheridan Ave. The Mont Blanc Chamber Orchestra with some musicians from the The Symphony of the Americas (the orchestra that gives concerts in Weston.) It is a good orchestra made up of professional musicians as well as students. They played some 18th century chamber music, with two very talented soloists a violinist and flutist. They will be doing this concert again at Temple Dor Dorim tonight.

Some thoughts on Classical Music, while popular music changes every generation
( I listened and danced to the Big Bands) Classical Music with many additions is the same as people listened to 300 years ago, it is ageless and beautiful. If a person returned here from the 18th century he would not recognize a thing, everything is entirely different, but if he went into a concert hall he would know the music and the instruments.

We should not deny our children the opportunity to listen and appreciate Classical Music it will last them all their lives.

It's too bad that we don't have a classical radio station here.

We used to. I believe it was WTMI. I used to listen to it in the car (and sometimes at home) when I was in my late teens and I used to play it in the car for my children when they were small - especially when we were in the car, as I found it calmed them down when they were a bit too excited. Unfortunately, that station, along with the only local jazz station WLVE, went the way of the dinosaur.

Being an ex-"ballerina", we listened to mostly classical growing up in my house, but not via radio station. My father had a small collection of classical. To this day, one of my all-time favorites is Tchiakovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major, Opus 35. The first two movements in particular are quite heart-wrenching and beautiful. They remind me of my father. He studied the violin as child, for about 8 years.
My father also loved the opera, as did his next oldest brother. The two older ones, (there were 4), not so much. Unfortunately, father never played Opera in the house so I never familiarized myself with it, and so don't care much for it. But I'm sure, given the time and opportunity, I could develop an ear and fondness for it, as I did with Classical music.
And my second son usually plays classical when he studies.

Tiny, I love the Opera and when I was teaching the Broward Center would host students (for free!) during weeknight shows and sometimes dress rehearsals. Many students were shocked that they also liked it.

We do have a wonderful classical music station, it is 89.7 on the FM dial. It is a public radio station 24 hours a day with no commercials. Thanks goodness for government. I forget the call letters.

At least I think it's 24 hours a day, at my age I go to bed early.

I listen to 89.7 on my commute back and forth to Miami. Very relaxing on days someone else is driving and I just want to close my eyes

I am so happy to see that so many of you are interested in Classical Music. When we go to concerts most of the audience are senior citizens and I worry that this will be last generation to love classical music. You give me hope.

Now if I can get some of you interested in nature!!!!

Checked it out. Nice station. I wish someone would have told me about it sooner.
